1
Check your blood pressure in the morning and at night prior to going to bed. Even though blood pressure readings vary, checking your blood pressure regularly will help you keep abreast of any sudden changes. It is best if you purchase your own in-home blood pressure monitor; however, if you are not able to, some stores have places where you can sit and take your own blood pressure.

2
Monitor what you eat and make wise food choices. For example, you should not eat food high in sodium. Forego foods such as ham and bacon. Read food labels, and make sure that you understand serving sizes and how much sodium is in each serving size. If you eat two servings, understand that your sodium intake is double. Furthermore, if overweight, losing weight is also a key to controlling high blood pressure.

3
Manage stress. Define what the cause of your stress is and devise ways or methods to eliminate or lessen your stress. There is no set way; however, do what works best for you. Some activities could include meditation and yoga.

4
Take your prescribed blood pressure medication, if your high blood pressure cannot be controlled naturally or with diet. Read the insert and ask any questions, if in doubt. For instance, if you are taking two different blood pressure pills, they may not be as effective if taken together. Additionally, some may be taken without food and others with food.
