What Are the Causes & Symptoms of High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, as known as the "silent killer," killed more than 57,000 people in the United States in 2005. In 2009, the American Heart Association's reports showed that more than 70 million people in the United States over the age of 20 have high blood pressure. With this rapid rise, it is increasingly important that people are aware of the symptoms and causes of high blood pressure.
  1. Causes

    • Years of study and research have confirmed that there are little known causes for high blood pressure. Of the many individuals affected by high blood pressure, only 5 to 10 percent of these individuals have actual causes. The American Heart Association reports that these small groups of individuals have high blood pressure due to kidney abnormalities, structural aorta abnormalities or narrowing arteries. The remaining 90 to 95 percent of individuals are unable to certify the cause of their high blood pressure.

    No Symptoms

    • High blood pressure has been nicknamed the "silent killer" because many people do not show signs of high blood pressure until it's too late. Many people do not find that they have high blood pressure until they have had a stroke, kidney failure or found that they have heart disease. These detrimental outcomes stem from years of artery erosion that result from high blood pressure. It is important that you check your blood's pressure regularly.

    Commonly Mistaken Symptoms

    • Many high blood pressure symptoms can be commonly mistaken for something else, if you fail to see your physician. Symptoms such as tiredness, headache and light-headedness are generally overlooked. Many individuals dismiss the symptoms for other things such as hunger, lack of sleep and relaxation.

    Breathlessness While Lying Flat

    • If you have difficulty breathing while lying flat, you should see your physician immediately. This symptom is a common symptom of heart and lung issues. While the symptom may be easily resolved, it can be a sign of a serious issue. Speak with your doctor immediately.

    Disorientation and Confusion

    • If you are unable to think clearly, feel disoriented and have difficulty remembering things, you may be showing signs of high blood pressure, low blood sugar or electrolyte imbalance, just to name a few.

    Unsustainable Erection and Impotence

    • Men who are unable to sustain an erection or find themselves to be impotent may be showing signs of high blood pressure. High blood pressure affects the flow of blood in the erectile area, which disturbs its function. If you have difficulty in this area more than 25 percent of the time, it is recommended that you seek your doctor's assistance.

    Other Symptoms

    • There are many other symptoms that can be signs of high blood pressure as well as other conditions. These signs include, but are not limited to, an altered or fluttered heart rate, pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, tinnitus, double-vision, nosebleeds and swelling of the hands and legs. In most cases, if you visit your physician regularly, you can address any potential high blood pressure issues before it is too late.
