Cold Medicines That Cause High Blood Pressure

Several over-the-counter cold medications contain ingredients that may temporarily cause high blood pressure. Although this side effect may be dangerous to hypertensives, there are alternatives available that do not cause high blood pressure. Additionally, there are ways to identify medications that cause high blood pressure, and determine whether these medications are safe for use.
  1. Significance

    • According to the American Heart Association, cold medications that contain hypertensive ingredients are dangerous to those who suffer from high blood pressure and may interact with hypertension medications.

    Types

    • Cold medications containing decongestants are known to constrict blood vessels, causing hypertenstion.

    Identification

    • Refer to the label on the medicine package. Decongestants found in over-the-counter cold medications are pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine. Products containing pseudoephedrine are now kept behind the pharmacy counter. Also, several products containing phenylephrine will have "PE" following the name of the product.

    Prevention/Solution

    • When avoiding cold medications that cause high blood pressure, choose formulas that do not contain decongestants. Or, choose a medication formulated for hypertensives.

    Considerations

    • Cold medications that cause high blood pressure are not unsafe for everyone. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist to determine if a decongestant would be right for you.
