Treatments for Uncontrolled Hypertension

Hypertension is known as high blood pressure. Hypertension does not have many symptoms. For that reason you should have your blood pressure checked regularly. Many times a lifestyle change can treat hypertension. For some, however, a lifestyle change may not be enough and that is when medication should be taken. Always consult your doctor for the correct form of action against hypertension.
  1. Lifestyle Changes

    • If you suffer from uncontrolled hypertension, a lifestyle change may make it more controllable. Eating foods that are low in sodium content along with lots of water, fruit, vegetables and whole grains can make a difference. Eat no more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium. Limiting alcohol and fatty foods from your diet can help to lower your blood pressure. Exercising can also help to control hypertension. Just losing 5 pounds can lower your blood pressure. You should not use tobacco if you suffer from uncontrolled hypertension. These lifestyle changes may not be enough however to control hypertension.

    Medications

    • There are many types of prescription medications on the market that are used to control hypertension. Your doctor will work with you to chose which medication will work best. Diuretics are one such prescription. Diuretics are also known as water pills. The pills help your kidneys eliminate sodium and water. Normally, diuretics are the first type of medication your physician will put you on. Another type of medication that is used to help control hypertension is beta blockers. This medication makes your heart beat slower thus lessening the hypertension.

As always, consultant your doctor to find the medication that is right for you. Not all medications work the same for each person and your doctor will be able to help you chose the right course of action.

    Managing Stress

    • Stress reduction is a great way to try and relieve hypertension. When you become stressed your blood pressure automatically rises. Try deep breathing techniques a few times a day for about 10 to 20 minutes. Deep breathing relaxes your entire body. When you practice deep breathing regularly your body responds in a positive way, making you more relaxed. When you come into a stressful situation practice deep breathing to keep your stress level under control.

Meditation and yoga are two ways to help control stress. Meditation helps your mind to focus. Yoga is great exercise but is also very relaxing and practices breathing techniques.

You may need to find your own type of stress management. Writing in a journal, exercising or reading may be a stress reliever for you. Everyone has their own type of activity that will help relieve stress.
