ACE Inhibitor Side Effects

ACE inhibitor medications are most often used to treat high blood pressure, but are also used in cases of heart attacks, heart surgery, stroke prevention and to prevent kidney problems for some people who are diabetic. As with any medication, ACE inhibitors present a possibility of experiencing side effects.
  1. Pregnancy

    • ACE inhibitors have been shown to have a side effect that causes birth defects, so pregnant women should avoid taking them, especially in the last two trimesters.

    Digestive

    • Some people experience digestive problems as side effects when taking an ACE Iinhibitor. Both constipation and diarrhea, as well as nausea, appetite loss and taste disruptions, are possible.

    Head Area

    • Headaches, dizziness, feeling flushed, being light-headed, having a sore throat, and yellow eyes or skin (such as with liver problems) are also among possible side effects. Any side effects that cause yellowing should be looked into by your doctor, as they could mean that you have a rare side effect of liver failure, which can be life threatening.

    Allergic Side Effects

    • Some people have allergy type side effects. Skin rash or hives, itching, face, tongue, or mouth swelling, difficulty breathing or wheezing, or even being dizzy, can all be signs of an allergic reaction.

    Possible Interactions

    • ACE Inhibitors should not be taken with some other medications, and if it is there may be more chance of serious side effects as a drug interaction. Talking to your doctor will help to know if you need to monitor the time between two different medications, or stop taking one when you need to take the other.
