Bosentan Side Effects

Bosentan is a medication prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. This type of high blood pressure affects the main artery carrying blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. Sold under the brand Tracleer, bosentan allows blood vessels in the lungs to relax and expand. Several side effects are possible.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects associated with bosentan are flushing and feelings of warmth, headache, itching, muscle aches, nose and throat irritation and runny nose.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Gastrointestinal effects are less common. These include acid stomach, belching, heartburn, indigestion and stomach pain.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Although unlikely, bosentan can cause changes in heart rate, including a racing, irregular or pounding heartbeat. This may be accompanied by dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion and fainting. Another serious side effect is edema, or swelling of the feet, ankles, lower legs and hands.

    Liver Problems

    • Bosentan can cause serious liver problems, and doctors typically schedule regular blood tests to monitor liver function. Symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

    Pregnancy Considerations

    • Bosentan must not be used during pregnancy because it can cause serious birth defects.
