Health Benefits of Vanadyl Sulfate

Vanadyl sulfate is a compound of vanadium, which is found in eggs, vegetable oils, pepper, buckwheat, oats, radishes and dill. Vanadyl sulfate is a synthetic form of insulin. According to Vanderbilt University, it is popular among weight lifters wanting to increase their levels of insulin. It is a supplement that is also used to help control blood glucose levels in diabetics.
  1. Diabetes

    • There are claims that vanadyl sulfate can be used to treat diabetes. According to the Wellness Letter from the University of California, Berkeley, very large daily doses are needed to have a positive effect. These large doses can have side effects of diarrhea and cramping. It is not recommended that diabetics take this supplement without discussing it with their physician.

    Body Building

    • Vanadyl sulfate is often used by body builders and weight lifters because the increased insulin effect results in less glucose stored as fat in the muscles. This leads to more muscle mass, increased blood flow and more prominent veins. However, according to Vanderbilt University, the effect is reduced during exercise and so does not work in this case.

    Weight Loss

    • Because of its ability to regular blood sugar, vanadyl sulfate is thought to help with weight loss. The theory is that it helps to curb your appetite, but there is no scientific evidence to support this theory. According to a 1994 hypertension article of the American Heart Association Journal, a study showed that rats treated with vanadyl sulfate gained weight more slowly than those not treated. However, they continued to gain weight, and the weights were similar between the two groups.

    Toxicity

    • According to Nutritional Supplements Health Guide, a typical dose of vanadyl sulfate is between 30 and 60 mg daily. The dose suggested for treatment of diabetes is between 100 and 125 mg according to the Wellness Guide to Dietary Supplements. Such high levels can be toxic. Long-term effects of vanadyl sulfate have not been studied.

    Warning

    • A safe dosage of vanadyl sulfate has not been determined, and the supplement is not controlled by the Food and Drug Administration. In addition, its supposed benefits have not yet been proven. Before taking vanadyl sulfate as a treatment for diabetes, a weight loss supplement or a body building supplement, you should consult with your physician.
