Hydralazine Side Effects

Hydralazine is a medication prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Available in generic form and under the brand name Apresoline, hydralazine is a vasodilator, effective at relaxing blood vessels. Several side effects are possible, but many are temporary.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects associated with hydralazine include anxiety, dizziness, fatigue flushing or sensations of warmth, headache, joint or muscle pain and nasal congestion.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Gastrointestinal effects also are common with hydralazine. A patient might experience constipation or diarrhea, indigestion, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Some people can have an allergic reaction to hydralazine. Signs include a rash or hives, facial or mouth swelling, severe dizziness and breathing difficulties.

    Peripheral Neuropathy

    • Hydralazine can cause a Vitamin B6 deficiency, which results in peripheral neuropathy, with symptoms of numbness or tingling in the feet or hands. The physician may recommend a Vitamin B6 supplement.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious but rare side effects can occur when taking hydralazine. These include abnormal bruising, confusion, infrequent or painful urination, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat and heart palpitations. Additionally, jaundice and dark urine are both signs of liver problems that can result from hydralazine use.
