Side Effects of Lotrel
Lotrel is the brand name for a combination of two drugs prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Amlodipine besylate is a calcium channel blocker, while benazepril hydrochloride is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Side effects can occur, though they are uncommon.-
Most Common Effects
-
The most common side effects are a dry cough, dizziness, a headache, and high blood potassium. All these effects occurred in fewer than 4 percent of participants. Light-headedness and fatigue also can occur.
Common Serious Effect
-
About 2 percent of clinical trial participants experienced unexplained swelling of the head, face, throat, neck, hands or feet. This side effect should be considered serious, as it may be an allergic reaction.
Allergic Reaction
-
Other symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash and itching, severe dizziness, wheezing, and difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Rare Serious Effects
-
Additional serious side effects are rare. Some include fainting, stomach pain, vomiting, fever, sore throat, decrease in urination, irregular heartbeat or slow pulse. Symptoms of liver problems, such as jaundice, also can rarely occur.
Pregnancy Concerns
-
Pregnant women should not use Lotrel because the drug can cause birth defects and fetal death if used during the last 6 months of pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
-
Lotrel can interact with lithium, potassium supplements, salt substitutes that contain potassium, and diuretics. Side effects of either drug taken could be increased, decreased or altered.
