What Is Cozaar?

Cozaar is a drug used to treat high blood pressure. It is a member of a group of drugs referred to as angiotensin II blockers (ARB's) or angiotensin II antagonists. The generic name for Cozaar is Losartan. Cozaar treats hypertension by keeping the blood vessels open or dilated. Cozaar blocks angiotensin release in the kidneys. Angiotensin makes blood vessels narrow, or constrict. Blood pressure medication, including Cozaar is also given in combination with other drugs.
  1. Effects

    • The effects of Cozaar may take up to three weeks. Cozaar improves blood flow to the kidneys. You may notice an increase in urine output as Cozaar starts to act to relax the blood vessels and treat high blood pressure. Your doctor will monitor kidney function with a lab test. It is important to monitor your blood pressure, either with a home blood pressure monitoring device or at your doctor's office.

    Side Effects of Cozaar

    • Cozaar can cause muscle damage. A rare side effect is angioedema, an allergic response that causes swelling and difficulty breathing. Cozaar is a potassium-sparing drug. The use of salt substitutes or potassium supplements can cause elevated serum potassium levels. Do not take potassium supplements unless guided by your physician. A small number of patients reported dizziness, back pain, and upper respiratory infection. Irregular heart rate is also reported as a Cozaar side effect.

    Use in Pregnancy

    • If you become pregnant while taking Cozaar, it is important to discontinue the medication. Tell your doctor if you are planning pregnancy. Cozaar can cause harm to the fetus if used during pregnancy.

    Considerations

    • High blood pressure may cause no symptoms. Even if you feel well, take Cozaar as prescribed to prevent stroke and reduce your risk of heart attack. If you forget to take your medication, do not double up--take it at the next scheduled time. Do not take extra medication.

    Warning

    • If you think you may have taken too much Cozaar, seek emergency evaluation. Symptoms of Cozaar overdose include fainting, dizziness, low heart rate or fast heart rate.

Do not discontinue Cozaar on your own.

Do not drink alcohol when taking Cozaar.

Tell your doctor exactly what other drugs or supplements you are taking.

If you develop nausea and vomiting or diarrhea let your doctor know. Dehydration can potentiate the effects of Cozaar.

If you have ever been told you have kidney disease or abnormal kidney function tests, tell your doctor before taking Cozaar. Cozaar should not be used to treat high blood pressure in patients with kidney disease.
