Side Effects of Losartan

Losartan is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and to help prevent strokes. It can also be used by diabetics to help the kidneys from becoming damaged. It works by blocking the release of angiotensin, a hormone that attaches to blood vessels causing them to become narrowed. When angiotensin is blocked, blood vessels are relaxed and wider and blood pressure decreases. Losartan is a generic medication; it is also available under the brand name Cozaar.
  1. Dizziness

    • Losartan may make some users dizzy and lightheaded. While the dizziness is no cause for concern, patients should be careful when driving or doing other activities that require concentration until they know how the medicine will affect them. To prevent the lightheadedness or dizziness, Losartan users should refrain from getting up suddenly when sitting or laying down.

    Blurred Vision

    • Some people may experience blurred vision while their bodies adjust to taking Losartan. Although it can be bothersome, the condition will usually improve after taking the drug for a while. If the blurred vision suddenly becomes worse, contact your doctor.

    Diarrhea

    • Diarrhea is a side effect experienced by Losartan patients. The condition is no cause for concern, but if it worsens or becomes bothersome, contact your doctor.

    Kidney Problems

    • People who have kidney disease may experience further trouble with kidney function as a result of taking Losartan. Always inform your doctor of any kidney trouble before taking Losartan. Also inform your doctor immediately if you notice swelling in the hands, ankles or feet or if you experience unexplained weight gain.

    Serious Side Effects

    • In rare cases, people may experience side effects from Losartan that may require medical treatment. Inform your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following side effects: chest pain; dark urine; change in urine output; fast, slow or irregular heartbeat; difficulty swallowing; muscle pain or cramps; vision changes; jaundice; severe or persistent stomach pain or unusual bleeding or bruising.
