1
Find the blood pressure reading. It will contain two numbers. The top number is the systolic number and the bottom number is the diastolic number.

2
Read the systolic (top) number. A reading of 120 or below is desireable. A reading over 120 indicates prehypertension, and a reading above 140 indicates stage 1 hypertension. A reading over 160 indicates stage 2 hypertention
-
3
Read the diastolic (bottom) number. A reading of 80 or below is desirable. A reading over 80 indicates prehypertension, and a reading above 90 indicates stage 1 hypertension. A reading over 100 indicates stage 2 hypertension
-
4
Choose the higher category of hypertension if the systolic and diastolic numbers fall into two different categories.
-
5
Get your blood pressure checked regularly and follow the doctors recommendations concerning your blood pressure readings.
