What are the types of Hypertension?

There are two main types of hypertension:

1. Primary (essential) hypertension: This is the most common type of hypertension, accounting for about 95% of cases. The exact cause of primary hypertension is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as:

* Age: The risk of hypertension increases with age.

* Race: African Americans are more likely to develop hypertension than whites.

* Family history: Having a family history of hypertension increases your risk of developing the condition.

* Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases your risk of hypertension.

* Unhealthy diet: Eating a diet high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium can increase your risk of hypertension.

* Physical inactivity: Not getting enough exercise can increase your risk of hypertension.

* Smoking: Smoking can damage the blood vessels and increase your risk of hypertension.

* Excessive alcohol intake: Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure.

2. Secondary hypertension: This type of hypertension is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as:

* Kidney disease: Kidney disease can cause fluid retention and high blood pressure.

* Adrenal gland disorders: Certain adrenal gland disorders, such as Cushing's syndrome and Conn's syndrome, can cause high blood pressure.

* Thyroid disorders: Thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, can cause high blood pressure.

* Medications: Certain medications, such as birth control pills, steroids, and decongestants, can cause high blood pressure.

* Coarctation of the aorta: This is a narrowing of the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body.

* Sleep apnea: This is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
