What is high pressure in glaucoma?

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the pressure inside the eye. In glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, IOP is often elevated and can damage the optic nerve. High IOP is typically considered to be anything over 21 mm Hg, although it can vary from person to person.

It's important to note that high IOP alone does not necessarily mean you have glaucoma. Some people may have high IOP without glaucoma, and some people with glaucoma may have normal IOP. However, high IOP is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma, so it's essential to be monitored regularly if you have high IOP.
