What Are the Signs of High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure (HBP), also referred to as hypertension, is a dangerous condition that can cause a variety of problems, including heart failure and stroke. HBP may cause headaches, but is often asymptomatic. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, approximately one in three American adults has HBP.
  1. Risk Factors

    • Risk factors for HBP include a family history of HBP, increased age, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet, especially a diet too high in salt.

    Dangers

    • Blood pressure refers to the pressure of blood as it pushes against the arterial walls as the heart pumps blood. An increase in this force can lead to strokes, heart failure, coronary heart disease, aneurysms, blindness or kidney failure.

    Symptoms

    • HBP is usually asymptomatic, meaning there are no symptoms. Some people may experience headaches.

    Testing Blood Pressure

    • Blood pressure is measured with a blood pressure cuff. Since blood pressure can vary according to movement, stress and food intake, you will be tested many times if you may have HBP.

    Significance

    • It is important to know your blood pressure, even if you feel healthy. Many people have HBP for several years without knowing it. Even if you don't feel sick, high blood pressure could be damaging your body.

    Prevention

    • Prevent HBP by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, losing weight if you need to, not smoking and managing your stress.
