Toprol Problems

Toprol is a prescription-only medication used to treat chest pain (angina) and high blood pressure. Toprol is produced by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and was approved by the FDA in 2001. Problems associated with Toprol include racing heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness and nausea, as well as other possible drug interactions.

  1. Dosage

    • Toprol is prescribed as a tablet for oral consumption. It is is available in doses of 25mg to 100mg. How much Toprol you take will depend on the severity of your condition. Take Toprol exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor.

    Problems With Dosage

    • The biggest problem associated with dosage is the possibility of Toprol overdose. It is very important that you never double up on this medication, as it could lead to overdose. Symptoms of Toprol overdose include difficulty breathing, feeling dizzy or weak, and bluish-colored fingernails. Seek immediate medical treatment if you fear you are experiencing Toprol overdose.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Some side effects of Toprol can be fatal and require emergency medical attention. Seek help right away if you experience lightheadedness or dizziness, or if your ankles suddenly swell. A yellowing of the skin and eyes (caused by jaundice) can also occur. If you feel your heart racing or feel short of breath, seek emergency care. Dark urine is also considered a severe side effect of Toprol, so be sure to get help if you experience any of these side effects.

    Moderate Side Effects

    • Side effects of Toprol that are considered moderate also should be reported to your doctor. He may need to adjust your Toprol dose. Such side effects include anxiety, feeling tired, having a decreased sex drive, feeling nauseous, or vomiting.

    Interaction

    • Toprol should not be taken if you have a medical condition called slow heart rate. It should also be avoided if you suffer from heart block. Do not drink alcohol while taking Toprol, as this will interfere with how the medicine is absorbed in your system.
