Toprol is a prescription medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina (chest pain) and heart attack. Manufactured by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, Toprol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. Side effects of Toprol include shortness of breath, dizziness, diarrhea, depression and lack of energy or feeling tired.-
Dosage
-
Toprol is typically prescribed in 25 to 100 mg doses (and the strength of your prescription will depend on the severity of your condition). Be sure to take your Toprol exactly as it was prescribed and do not miss or skip a dose. If you forget to take your Toprol, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double up on your dose of Toprol, as this may cause an overdose. Toprol overdose symptoms include weakness or dizziness, an uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath or bluish-colored fingernails (which indicates that your body is not circulating enough oxygen). Seek emergency medical attention if you experience Toprol overdose symptoms.
Severe Toprol Side Effects
-
Toprol is sometimes associated with serious side effects that require immediate emergency treatment. If you experience an uneven heartbeat or heart racing or pounding or are feeling faint, dizzy or lightheaded after taking Toprol, then you may be having an aversion to this medication. Other serious side effects related to Toprol are jaundice (a discoloration or yellowing of the eyes and skin), ankle swelling, shortness of breath or sharp stomach pain. Be sure to seek emergency assistance if you experience any serious side effects after taking Toprol.
Toprol and Depression
-
Toprol is also associated with the side effect of depression. You should tell your doctor if you have suffered from depressive thoughts or have a history of clinical depression before starting this medication. Toprol may make depression symptoms appear, or existing symptoms may worsen as a result of this medication. Symptoms of depression include inability to sleep or oversleeping, loss of appetite or overeating, loss of interest in your interests and hobbies, difficulty concentrating and anxiety. Tell your doctor if you think you are experiencing symptoms of depression as a result of taking Toprol. Seek emergency treatment if you have thoughts of harming yourself or others.
Moderate Side Effects
-
Sometimes Toprol is associated with more moderate side effects such as tiredness, which occurs in 10 percent of users. Other moderate side effects of Toprol include itchy skin rash, nausea and vomiting, decreased sex drive or impotence. Discuss with your doctor these side effects, or any others you feel you may be experiencing as a result of taking Toprol. Your physician may desire to adjust your medication.
Interaction
-
Some interactions with Toprol can cause complications to occur. It is important that you do not use alcohol while taking Toprol. When you are having a surgical procedure, it is important you inform your surgeon that you are taking Toprol (even if the surgery is dental). Do not take Toprol if you have a history of heart complications, such as heart block, heart failure or slow heart rate. Provide your doctor with your full medical history so he can evaluate any potential complications as a result of Toprol interactions.
