Signs & Symptoms of Thrush Disease
Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. It can affect the tongue, lips, roof of the mouth, lining of the cheeks and even the throat. This infection occurs when the yeast Candida, which is normally found on the body, is over-produced. This typically occurs when the immune system is weakened. According to WebMD, the elderly, smokers, people with high stress levels, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS are commonly afflicted with thrush.-
White Patches
-
One of the first signs of thrush is the appearance of white lesions on the interior of the mouth. These typically appear on the lips, tongue and/or cheeks, but they can appear on the roof of the mouth and the throat, as well. These lesions have a creamy, milky appearance, resembling cottage cheese.
Bleeding and Cracking
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, bleeding is often associated with thrush. This happens when the lesions are irritated. Irritation can occur when you brush your teeth or eat something that rubs against the lesions. Cracking at the corners of the mouth can also occur.
Discomfort and Pain
-
If you are infected with thrush, you may feel as if there is there is something lodged in your throat, according to WebMD. You may also experience a burning sensation in your mouth or throat. This occurs because of the over-abundance of yeast that occurs with this infection.
Fever
-
A fever may present itself in a thrush infection. According to Medicinenet, this happens when the infection spreads beyond the esophagus. A fever is your body's natural defense against infection, as your body tries to kill the virus or germs that cause the infection.
