Is HIV only transferred by another person?
HIV is only spread through certain bodily fluids of an infected person. These fluids are blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, and breast milk. It is not spread through saliva, sweat, or urine. The most common way that HIV is spread is through unprotected sex. It can also be spread through sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia, through receiving a blood transfusion from an infected person, or through organ transplantation from an infected person. There is no risk of getting HIV from casual contact with an infected person, such as shaking hands, hugging, or sharing utensils.
