Testosterone Therapy for Older Men

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testes of males. The hormone provides health benefits for men, such as muscle mass and strength. Testosterone levels decrease as a man ages, and may cause unwanted side effects. Testosterone therapy is beneficial in decreasing these symptoms.
  1. Symptoms

    • The testosterone hormone starts to decrease in men beginning in their 30's. Symptoms of declining testosterone levels in older men include a decrease in muscle mass and strength, loss of bone density, memory loss, depression or moodiness, changes in cholesterol levels and a decrease in sexual function.

    Diagnosis

    • Blood tests reveal a man's testosterone level. Several blood tests may be taken as the hormone fluctuates during the day. Highest testosterone levels are in the morning and your doctor will prefer to take your blood sample at that time.

    Benefits

    • Benefits of testosterone therapy in older men include an improvement in muscle mass and strength, increase in bone density, energy and sexual drive. Other benefits include a thickening of hair and an improvement in mood and memory.

    Risks

    • Testosterone replacement therapy brings risks such as enlargement of breasts, a retaining of water, cause acne, sleep apnea and baldness and limit sperm production. Other risks include urinary problems, cause non-cancerous growth in the prostate or may increase stimulation of prostate cancer. A prostate screening should be taken before testosterone therapy is started.

    Types Of Treatment

    • Testosterone therapy may be given in various forms. Injections are given every two to three weeks and provide a higher level of concentration of the hormone when the injection is given, with a tapering effect until the next injection. This may cause an increase in blood cell count.

A testosterone patch provides a more consistent dose of hormone into the body than injections. The patches are worn every day and rotate from the arms, back, stomach and buttocks. Skin irritation may be experienced where the patch is applied to the skin.

A topical testosterone cream is applied to the shoulders, arms and stomach. It is important not to transfer the cream onto your partner.
Pills are not currently available for testosterone replacement therapy according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Testosterone therapy is strictly individual and should be discussed with your doctor to determine if it is the right treatment for you.
