Provera Side Effects

Provera is a medication made up of medroxyprogesterone acetate used to correct abnormal changes in a female's menstrual cycle, sleep apnea, premenstrual tension and menopausal symptoms. The medication is also used to prevent abnormal growths from taking place on the uterine lining for users currently receiving estrogen replacement therapy. As is the case with most hormonal medications, there are a number of side effects associated with use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some common side effects include acne, nausea, spotty skin, increased tiredness, breast tenderness, increased flow of breast milk, headache, fluid retention, itching and skin discoloration. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with Provera, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using this medication. Some of these side effects include blood clots, allergic reaction, hives, difficulty breathing, bleeding in between menstrual cycles, cervical erosion, increased hair growth, menstrual flow changes and yellowing of the skin and eyes. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large number of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • Never use Provera during the first four months of a pregnancy as it can cause severe birth defects in the unborn baby. Do not use Provera if you suffer from any of the following ailments: cancer of the genitals or breast, liver disease, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding or if you have a dead fetus that has not been removed from the body. If you have ever developed blood clots in the past, it is strongly recommended that you do not take this medication.

    Use

    • Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages larger than what has been recommended on the label. Provera is administered in pill form and should always be taken with a full glass of water. This medication can be taken with or without food and should always be kept away from sources of moisture. Store Provera at room temperature for best results.

      If an overdose is suspected, contact the poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.
