Serotonin functions throughout the body in many other capacities. It helps body temperature and metabolism. It helps to inhibit aggression and regulate appetite as well as the sleep cycle.

An imbalance of serotonin levels depression, schizophrenia, as well as learning and compulsive disorders. A disruption of serotonin levels can also result in increased aggression.
Significance

Serotonin Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when two drugs are taken at the same time that both affect serotonin by increasing the levels released.
Considerations

Alcohol, caffeine and cigarette smoking can impair the natural production of serotonin. Health conditions such as diabetes and hypoglycemia as well as a genetic predisposition can also affect serotonin production.
