HCG Therapy Vs. Testosterone Therapy
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and testosterone are each endogenous hormones, meaning they are hormones produced within the human body. However, they are very different in many ways, and have vastly divergent medical applications. Both HCG and testosterone are often touted as options for weight-loss therapy in popular media. Examining what these chemicals do--and what they don't--is vital before discussing either as an option for therapy with your doctor.

HCG
-
Human chorionic gonadotropin, according to Katherine Zeratsky of the Mayo Clinic, is a hormone produced in the body by pregnant women. It is used to treat fertility issues, and a number of studies have been conducted to test its efficacy as a weight-loss treatment.
According to a study done by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, conducted among subjects suffering from obesity, HCG shows no scientific evidence to support its use as a therapy for weight loss. The Mayo Clinic reiterates this finding, stating that many similar studies have not yet brought forth sufficient evidence for the use of HCG therapy for weight loss due to obesity.
Testosterone
-
Testosterone is also an endogenous hormone (produced within the human body), although it is present in much higher amounts in men than in women. Testosterone production accelerates at puberty and declines through a person's late middle age.
The medical uses of testosterone therapy are primarily for men's health issues involving androgenic deficiency. According to the National Guideline Clearinghouse Task Force, symptoms of such a deficiency can produce problems such as loss of libido, feminine physical characteristics and low energy levels. Testosterone is also used to treat those affected by human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, to promote appetite and combat weight loss.
Illegal use of testosterone is sometimes found among athletes and bodybuilders, usually to produce muscle mass, thereby trimming away body fat.
The Bottom Line
-
HCG and testosterone therapies can't really be compared, other than by the fact that they are both endogenous hormones that are used in certain therapies. However, these uses are wildly divergent, and weight loss is not among them.
It's likely that you will encounter articles or websites devoted to promoting each for weight loss or muscle gain; however, it is not likely that these claims will be supported with scientific research from reputable sources. Remember, use of medications without a prescription or for reasons other than prescribed is illegal and can result in health problems and legal entanglements.
Both HCG and testosterone therapies have uses. Still, before considering either form of therapy, it is imperative that you talk to your doctor in order to find out whether HCG or testosterone therapy is the right choice for you.
