Cortrosyn Side Effects
Cortrosyn is the brand name for the generic drug cosyntropin. It is a synthetic of adrenocorticotropic hormone, which is used to stimulate the adrenal cortex to diagnose adrenal gland disorders. As with all prescription medications, side effects may occur while using Cortrosyn.-
Side Effects

The most common side effects while using Cortrosyn occur at the injection site. They include swelling, redness and minor irritation. Seek immediate medical care if serious side effects of rash, hives, dizziness, breathing difficulties or extreme swelling occur.
Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects may include bradycardia (low heart rate), tachycardia (fast heart rate), hypertension (high blood pressure) and peripheral edema, which is swelling in the lower extremities.
Drug Interactions

Cortrosyn may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor if you are taking cortisone, estrogen, hydrocortisone or water pills. Although not prescription medications, herbal supplements and vitamins you are taking should also be reported to your doctor.
Cortosyn Description

Cortrosyn is a mixture of 0.25 mg of Cortrosyn and 10 mg of mannitol, to be mixed with 1 mL of 0.9 percent sodium chloride injection. Intravenous and intramuscular are the administration routes.
Cortrosyn Uses

Cortrosyn is used as a diagnostic tool to screen for Addison's disease, corticosteroid insufficiency and pituitary tumors. The test lasts approximately 30 minutes and requires two venipunctures.
