What Lowers Testosterone
Testosterone is the male sex hormone, although it is present in females. It is made in large quantities in the male's testicles, and small amounts are made in a female's ovaries. Testosterone strengthens muscles, bones, and is critical for sexual development.-
Function
-
A person with an extremely high level of testosterone is more prone to fighting and is often distracted by sexual urges. Although a healthy lifestyle contributes to healthy testosterone production, a person may want to lower his testosterone levels if it is interfering with productivity in day-to-day life.
Diet
-
A high-fat diet and meat (animal-based protein that includes beef, pork, poultry) raises testosterone levels. Red meat is high in both saturated fat and protein, so it will increase testosterone more than most meats.Soy, a plant-based protein, can lower testosterone. Replace meat with soy products to lower the level of testosterone in your body. Alcohol also inhibits testosterone production.
Drugs
-
Marijuana and tobacco dramatically decrease testosterone levels. Avoid drugs, such as steroids, that mimic testosterone in the body.
Exercise
-
Limit exercise in your schedule. The more you work out, build muscle and increase fitness levels through cardio the higher your testosterone levels will be. A sedentary lifestyle lends itself to lowered testosterone production.
Psychological Factors
-
When men get married or have children, testosterone levels decline, according to a 2002 Harvard University study. The hormone levels can also dwindle during illness or depression.
