Levothyroxine Side Effects

Levothyroxine is a medication that replaces a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland to regulate metabolism and energy in the body. The medication is used to treat hypothyroidism and the enlargement of the thyroid gland. As with most hormonal supplements, there are a number of side effects that can come as a result of using Levothyroxine.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, there are certain side effects that can come as a result of using this medication. Some of these side effects include allergic reaction, rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightening of the chest, and swelling of the mouth, lips and tongue. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using Levothyroxine, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects that can come as a result of using this medication. Some of these side effects include trouble sleeping, headache, unusual irritability, sweating, fever, hot flashes, changes in menstrual cycle, sudden weight changes and appetite changes. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large number of people.

    Important Safety Information

    • Do not use this medication if you have recently had a heart attack, a thyroid disorder of any kind, or an adrenal gland problem that is not being regulated by this medication. Also, please consult with your doctor if you suffer from any of the following ailments: coronary artery disease, heart disease, diabetes, pituitary gland problems, adrenal gland problems or a history of blood clots.

    Usage

    • Always use Levothyroxine exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. Never take this medication for longer than what has been prescribed by your doctor and always be sure to take Levothyroxine with a full glass of water. The tablet has been known to dissolve very quickly, and without adequate water can cause the throat to swell up and prevent swallowing.

    • If you experience any of the aforementioned side effects, contact your local physician immediately.

      If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

      Levothyroxine is meant in the treatment of thyroid gland problems only and should never be used for any other medical condition unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
