Testosterone Symptoms in Women
Low libido and diminished sexual drive are symptoms women can experience when the testosterone hormone level decreases in the female body, according to USA Today's Health Scout.com. And as women age, and go through menopause, all of their hormone levels decrease, including testosterone. However, other symptoms of low testosterone levels can be experienced as well.-
Testosterone
-
Testosterone (a male's predominant sex hormone, which is instrumental in the development of male sex organs) is also a hormone found in women. However, its role in female sexuality takes a back seat to a female's predominate hormones: estrogen and progesterone. But even though testosterone does not play as prominent a role in women as it does men, it still impacts female sexuality by helping to influence sexual desire and drive.
Age-Induced Symptoms
-
As a woman ages, her hormone levels begin to decrease. And according to the University of Michigan's Health System, the decline in the hormone testosterone in aging women is substantial. In fact, the testosterone level of a 50 year old female is half what she had of the testosterone hormone when aged 25. This dramatic reduction in testosterone levels can produce sexual symptoms as a result (loss of libido and sexual drive).
Low Libido Symptom
-
According to the University of Michigan's Health System (UMHS), over 40 million women are estimated to suffer from low libido (sexual desire). And while some of these women suffer this symptom due to other circumstances like depression, fatigue, or stress, others suffer the symptom due to the decreasing levels of testosterone in their bodies.
Sex Symptom Study and Solution
-
In a study conducted by the University of Michigan's Health System (UMHS), the Phase Two Trial of the study indicated that the use of a testosterone patch was beneficial in increasing the low libido being experienced by female study participants due to low testosterone levels.
But while testosterone patches can prove beneficial in increasing testosterone levels (and libido) in the female body, care should be exercised in regards to the dosage level of the patch used, according to UMHS, since higher testosterone dosages can produce unwanted masculine side effects like excess body hair.
Low Sex Drive Symptom
-
Some women with declining testosterone levels are still interested in sex mentally, but they notice a marked physical decrease in their drive for it. This physical drive decrease can be due to lower testosterone levels, just like the low libido (sexual interest). And according to the Mayo Clinic, sex drive decrease can be tied to hormonal changes that women experience during menopause.
Other Testosterone Symptoms
-
If a woman experiences too much testosterone in her body, and the level of it is too high, she might suffer from the following symptoms: acne, hirsutism (too much hair on the body), as well as mood and personality changes.
