GnRH Hormone Treatment

GnRH stands for gonadotropin-releasing hormone. This hormone is produced by the hypothalamus in the brain and is a combination of ten amino acids. The GnRH hormone is typically released at the beginning of puberty and continues to be released in spurts every 1 or 2 hours. It is necessary for normal development of a person's sexual physiology.

GnRH therapy can also be used to stop menstrual periods and decrease the pain of endometriosis.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for a deficiency in GnRH hormone can be received through a nasal inhaler, in an injection or through an implant. Leuprolide is available by injection into the muscle once a month to every 3 months. Nafarelin can be taken through a nasal sprayer twice daily. Goserelin is a pill that is injected under the skin of the abdomen and is gradually absorbed into the body.

    Side Effects

    • GnRH hormone treatment can cause side effects such as hot flashes, headaches and osteoporosis. Mood swings, vaginal dryness and decreased sexual desire can also be common side effects. Most of the side effects of this treatment are similar to those of menopause. This is due to a decrease in production of estrogen.
