Testosterone Gel Treatment of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a relatively common condition that causes abnormal breast enlargement in males. It has been estimated that up to 30 percent of young men will experience this condition. The condition frequently presents during puberty and typically disappears on its own within a few months. Cases where real breast tissue is present and does not return to normal on its own may require medical treatment including surgery. Some men have opted for self-treatment through the use of testosterone gel.-
Significance
-
In the United States, testosterone gel is medically approved for the treatment of symptoms experienced by men whose bodies do not produce enough testosterone. These symptoms may include a marked decrease in sexual desire and ability, low energy, and loss of typical male characteristics such as muscle definition and voice timbre. It is not listed by the National Institutes of Health as an approved treatment for gynecomastia.
Geography
-
Some foreign medical clinics advocate the use of testosterone gel for the treatment of gynecomastia. These clinics frequently note that a full pathology investigation should be conducted prior to beginning any treatment plan, including the use of testosterone gel. However, these clinics often claim that short-term treatment with testosterone gel can achieve significant results for a large majority of patients. These clinics note that prolonged use of testosterone gel may be harmful.
Function
-
To apply testosterone gel, insure the area of application is completely dry. Squeeze a portion of the gel onto your palm and rub it into your skin. Depending on the brand, the gel is typically rubbed into the shoulders or upper arms. Some brands may be rubbed into your chest or abdomen; others should not be rubbed into your abdomen. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the proper procedure for the specific type of gel you have been prescribed. Never apply testosterone gel to your penis or scrotum. Do not apply testosterone gel to any area where sores, cuts or abrasions are present.
Considerations
-
Always thoroughly wash your hands after applying testosterone gel. Dispose of the empty tube and all packaging in a trash receptacle that is inaccessible to children. Allow the gel to dry completely before getting dressed. Do not bathe or swim for at least five hours after applying testosterone gel. Use caution to prevent getting the gel in your eyes, and contact your doctor immediately if you do.
Warning
-
Testosterone gel has been shown to cause numerous side effects including breast enlargement, breast pain, decreased libido, acne outbreaks, hair loss, headache, swelling of the extremities, loss of sleep and discoloration of the skin. According to a recent warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration, children, both boys and girls, who are accidentally exposed to testosterone gel can experience premature development of male characteristics. Testosterone gel should never be used by women, especially women who are pregnant, nursing or may become pregnant.
