What are the reproductive hormones?
Male Reproductive Hormones
- Testosterone: Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males and is responsible for developing and maintaining male characteristics such as muscle mass, bone density, body hair, and a deep voice. It is produced mainly by the testes and is essential for sperm production.
- Luteinizing hormone (LH): LH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the testes to produce testosterone and sperm.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): FSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the testes to produce sperm.
Female Reproductive Hormones
- Estrogen: Estrogen, primarily estradiol, is the primary sex hormone in women. It is responsible for developing and maintaining female characteristics such as breast development, wide hips, and a high-pitched voice. It is produced mainly by the ovaries.
- Progesterone: Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy by thickening the lining. It is produced mainly by the ovaries and the placenta during pregnancy.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): FSH stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs.
- Luteinizing hormone (LH): LH triggers ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary.
