Alternative Testosterone Therapy for Men
Decreasing testosterone is a problem for many men, especially those in their 40s and 50s. Men who want to maintain a healthy level of testosterone have several options. Some are simple, and some are more extreme. But all offer the promise of building health, muscle mass and libido.-
Dietary Improvements
-
Start with your diet. Consume healthy amounts of protein at least three times daily This protein should not be low in fat. Grass-fed organic meat is the best source, but nuts and seeds, eggs and dairy are all good sources, as well. Low-fat diets are detrimental to testosterone production.
Avoid processed chemicals and plastics. These chemicals tend to act like estrogen in the body and work against testosterone. Minimizing their consumption will help your body's hormone balance. Processed plastics tend to be the worst, and foods or liquids that come in plastic packages or bottles should be avoided.
Exercise
-
Strength training can be very helpful in stimulating testosterone, as well as muscle. Five sets of five repetitions of three to five exercises three days a week is a sufficient place to start. Don't start out too aggressively. Getting hurt will not help your testosterone production.
Supplements
-
There are a number of supplements on the market that can naturally increase your testosterone. These are typically vitamin and mineral blends or herbal blends. Among the most common are ZMA, tribulus and maca. ZMA is a blend of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B-6 that, when taken before bed on an empty stomach, can increase testosterone production.
Tribulus and maca are herbs that also boost testosterone production. They should be consumed with food throughout the day.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
-
Hormone replacement therapy is an option. Treatment is available in various forms, including hormone precursors such as DHEA, creams and even injectable steroids. Hormone replacement therapy is extremely effective, but is a very precise science, as you need to cycle on and off properly. It should not be attempted without the supervision of your licensed health-care practitioner.
