Does a Hormone Imbalance Cease Hair Growth?

Hair loss affects men and women of all ages. If your normal hair growth has ceased, it could be caused by a damaging hairstyle, a scalp infection or a hormone imbalance.
  1. Hair Growth

    • Hair growth happens in three stages. First, hair grows, then it rests, and then it is shed. Usually, a new hair begins to grow in its place right away. When something like a hormone imbalance interferes with those stages, hair growth can cease.

    Thyroid

    • If your thyroid is over- or under-active, it can cause a hormone imbalance, which in turn can cause your hair to fall out and stop new hair growth.

    Androgen/Estrogen

    • If your androgen or estrogen hormone levels are out of balance, your hair could stop growing. This is called male-pattern or female-pattern baldness.

    Other

    • Other hormone imbalances can cause hair growth to cease. Many women experience hair loss after pregnancy. Hair loss can be an early sign that you have diabetes.

    Considerations

    • Once you receive treatment for the hormone imbalance you are experiencing, your hair loss will stop and hair growth will begin again.
