• In some cases, hyperthyroidism can trigger unusually frequent bowel movements, or other changes in bowel function such as diarrhea.

• The Mayo Clinic cites numerous other potential effects of hyperthyroidism, including arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), rapid weight loss, anxiety, irritability, hand tremors, menstrual changes and fatigue.

Diagnosis Difficulties

• The symptoms of hyperthyroidism are similar to those found in other disorders, and doctors sometimes have difficulty making an accurate diagnosis.

Treatments

• Hyperthyroidism may be successfully treated through medications, surgery or the introduction of radioactive iodine to destroy thyroid cells.
