Menopause Pills

There are many types of menopause pills available including Premarin, birth control pills and pills made from herbal extracts like evening primrose. Most of the pharmaceuticals are forms of hormone treatment. The most successful herbal remedies come from a plant native to Germany and traditional Chinese medicine.
  1. Premarin

    • Menopause pills with "pre" in their names typically refer to Premarin. Premarin is made from hormones that are extracted from the urine of pregnant mares, hence the name.

    Birth Control Pills

    • Birth control pills are often used for menopause because they give a hormonal boost that has been proven to alleviate hot flashes, night sweats and other common symptoms of menopause.

    Remifemin

    • An herbal extract known as Remifemin can be taken to combat many of the symptoms of menopause, including some of the more severe symptoms like osteoporosis.

    Chinese Medicine

    • Another herbal menopause pill that is often marketed with the generic title "Menopause Pills" is made of a traditional mixture of Chinese herbs. These herbs include ginseng, radix dyperi and gallus nigrosis.

    Evening Primrose

    • Evening primrose is an herb native to North America that has been shown to reduce breast pain due to the menstrual cycle and menopause. Although no current test results provide proof, many women report alleviation from several other menopausal symptoms when taking evening primrose pills as well.

    Safety

    • You should always consult with your doctor before going on or off of a pill. You should also consult with your doctor about your risk of cancer. Extended hormone therapy, which includes all menopause pharmaceuticals, has been shown to increase your risk for cancer.
