How to Lower Male Estrogen

The estrogen hormone in high levels in males can cause adverse side effects such as weight gain, decreased sex drive, enlarged breasts, or gynecomastia, and prostate problems. Low doses of estrogen are needed for certain bodily functions in men, but as they age estrogen levels may increase. There are certain measures that can be taken, such as diet and lifestyle changes, or hormone therapy in extreme cases that can lower estrogen levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Seek medical advice if you believe your estrogen levels are too high and are experiencing some of the above listed symptoms. Your physician can help you decide the proper treatment.

    • 2

Increase exercise and engage in moderate to intense workouts at least 30 minutes a day such as aerobics, running, or weight lifting. This can increase muscle mass and decrease the estrogen hormone.

    • 3

Practice a healthy diet, low in fat and well-balanced in fruits and vegetables. Avoid grapefruit because this can increase estrogen levels.

    • 4

Take vitamin supplements such as zinc. The chemical makeup is similar to testosterone and can help decrease estrogen levels.

    • 5

Consider hormone replacement therapy for men. There are a few prescription medication options such as gelatin capsule pills, topical creams and gels, injections, or skin patches. Capsules and injections can give you the highest level of male hormones. Your doctor can help you decide which method is best for you.
