What Are the Benefits of LHE Laser Treatment?
People who suffer from mild to moderate acne often use topical creams containing benzoyl peroxide, retinoids or anti-inflammatory compounds. Those with more severe acne, however, may seek alternative solutions. The Food and Drug Administration has approved several types of laser and light therapy for the treatment of acne. Pulsed light and heat energy (LHE) therapy may be used in difficult cases of acne that have not responded positively to traditional medications and treatments.-
Kills Bacteria
-
A certain type of bacteria called Propionobacterium acnes, or P. acnes, infects the pores of people with acne. The bacterial infection causes inflammation and the redness associated with acne. The light from LHE treatment causes a type of molecule called porphyrins to release oxygen. This oxygen kills the P. acnes bacteria, removing a major source of skin irritation and inflammation. The anti-bacterial action of LHE treatment reduces symptoms of acne.
Reduces Sebum Production
-
Another source of acne is the excessive production of sebum, or skin oils, by glands. Many over-the-counter topical creams target oil production, but LHE treatment works more effectively to decrease sebum levels. The heat from lasers in LHE decreases the size of sebaceous glands and causes them to lower oil production. LHE thus targets another significant source of acne and unclogs pores more effectively than traditional approaches.
Long-Term Effects
-
Topical creams and gels decrease oil production and achieve temporary relief from acne symptoms. LHE, however, removes the source of acne problems and results in a long term solution. According to the website Skin Care Physicians, a recent study showed that following a four week course of LHE treatment, mild to moderate acne improved significantly. Positive effects continued up to two months following the last treatment. LHE treatment is thus a safe long-term solution to acne problems.
