HPV Numbers & What They Mean

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that is transmitted by skin to skin contact. There are over 100 types of HPV, often referred to as strains.
  1. HPV Numbers

    • Each strain of HPV is referred to by a number. Different numbers indicate different outcomes.

    Significance

    • About 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    HPV and Warts

    • HPV-1, HPV-2, and HPV-3 cause warts on the hands, feet, and other areas of the body. HPV-6 and HPV-11 cause warts on the genitals and anus according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

    HPV and Cancer

    • HPV-16 and HPV-18 can cause cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, head and neck, and most commonly the cervix.

    Treatment and Prevention

    • There is no cure for HPV, though most healthy people’s immune systems will fight the infection off within two years, according to the CDC. Vaccines are available to protect men and women from some strains of HPV. Using latex or polyurethane condoms or barriers (like a dental dam) for each sex act can reduce your risk of sexually transmitted HPV.
