What is the Physiological significance of FEV1 and or FVC ratio besides diagnosing what does it reveal?
Physiological significance of FEV1 and or FVC ratio:
The FEV1/FVC ratio is a measure of airflow limitation. It is the ratio of the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) to the forced vital capacity (FVC). The FEV1 is the maximum volume of air that can be forcefully exhaled from the lungs in one second. The FVC is the maximum volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled from the lungs after a maximal inspiration.
The FEV1/FVC ratio is a simple and non-invasive test that can be used to assess the severity of airflow limitation. It is often used to diagnose and monitor the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
In healthy individuals, the FEV1/FVC ratio is typically greater than 0.7. In individuals with COPD, the FEV1/FVC ratio is typically less than 0.7. The lower the FEV1/FVC ratio, the more severe the airflow limitation.
The FEV1/FVC ratio can also be used to assess the reversibility of airflow limitation. In individuals with asthma, the FEV1/FVC ratio may improve after bronchodilator therapy. This indicates that the airflow limitation is reversible and that the individual may benefit from bronchodilator therapy.
In addition to diagnosing COPD and assessing the reversibility of airflow limitation, the FEV1/FVC ratio can also be used to:
* Predict the risk of developing COPD
* Monitor the progression of COPD
* Assess the response to treatment for COPD
* Make decisions about the need for lung transplantation
