Why would one have HCG injections?

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced during pregnancy. It is commonly used in the following scenarios:

1. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) :

- Ovulation induction: HCG may be administered to trigger ovulation in women undergoing fertility treatments like IVF (In vitro fertilization) or IUI (Intrauterine insemination). It mimics the natural LH (Luteinizing Hormone) surge that normally triggers ovulation.

2. Pregnancy support:

- Luteal phase support: In some cases, HCG may be given to support the corpus luteum (a structure that forms during ovulation) and increase progesterone levels. This helps maintain the pregnancy.

3. Ectopic pregnancy:

- Diagnostic purposes: HCG levels are monitored in pregnancy to assess the viability of the pregnancy. If HCG levels are not rising appropriately or are unusually low, it may indicate an ectopic pregnancy.

- Treatment (in selected cases): Low-dose HCG may be used in certain cases to treat unruptured ectopic pregnancies.

4. Male hypogonadism:

- Testosterone production: In men with certain conditions like hypogonadism (low testosterone), HCG may be used to stimulate Leydig cells in the testes, promoting testosterone production.

It's important to note that HCG injections should be used under the supervision of a qualified medical professional, as they may have specific dosage considerations and potential side effects.
