How are a DMD and DDS different?

DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) and DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) are both dental degrees that qualify the holder to practice dentistry. In the United States, both degrees are awarded by accredited dental schools and require the same amount of education and training.

So what's the difference?

Traditionally, the DDS degree was awarded by schools that emphasized the surgical aspects of dentistry, while the DMD degree was awarded by schools that focused on the medical aspects of dentistry. However, the distinction between the two degrees has become increasingly blurred over time. Today, most dental schools offer programs that lead to either a DMD or DDS degree, and the curriculum for both degrees is very similar.

In fact, there are only two significant differences between the DMD and DDS degrees:

1. The name of the degree.

2. The school that awards the degree.
