Types of Wart Removers

Warts are common skin growths caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPV. There are several types of warts, including common, flat, plantar and genital warts. Because the various HPV viruses cause different types of warts, there are different types of wart removers. Warts usually heal on their own, but the removers can accelerate the healing or remove the wart.
  1. Over-the-Counter Medications

    • There are many over-the-counter medications to treat warts. Compound W and TinaMed Wart Remover are two well-known wart removers. Usually these products contain salicylic acid, which removes the layers of the wart.

    Home Remedies

    • There are a few natural remedies that help with warts. Lemon juice has citric acid and apple cider vinegar has acetic acid. These mild acids can exfoliate the layers of the wart, and in time the warts disappear.

    Herbal Remedies

    • There are a few essential oils that contain acids that treat warts. Lemon balm oil contains citric acid, and birch oil has betulinic acid.

    Medical Procedures

    • Doctors use trichloroacetic acid to do chemical peels to remove warts. With electrocautery a doctor uses electrical currents to burn off the warts. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off the warts.

    Surgery

    • Surgery is reserved for the most stubborn of warts. This medical procedure involves a doctor cutting out the wart. There is also laser surgery in which the wart is cut out with a beam of light.
