What to Know About Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia: is a condition in which your blood glucose levels (also called blood sugar) drop too low. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

- Shakiness

- Sweating

- Hunger

- Nausea

- Dizziness

- Confusion

- Seizures

- Loss of consciousness

Causes

- Not eating enough

- Drinking too much alcohol

- Taking too much insulin or other diabetes medication

- Exercising too much

- Certain medical conditions, such as liver disease or kidney disease

Risk factors

- Diabetes

- Eating disorders

- Alcohol use disorder

- Certain medications

- Adrenal insufficiency

- Pituitary insufficiency

Treatment

1. Mild Hypoglycemia:

Eat or drink something that contains sugar, such as:

- A piece of fruit

- A glass of juice

- A tablespoon of honey

- A candy bar

2. Severe Hypoglycemia:

Inject yourself with glucagon or take oral glucose tablets.

If your blood glucose level doesn't improve or if you're experiencing any symptoms of severe hypoglycemia, seek medical attention immediately.
