How is anemia measured?
Anemia is diagnosed with a complete blood count (CBC). This blood test measures the concentration of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in a sample of blood. An individual with anemia typically will have low levels of red blood cells. Depending on the severity of anemia, additional tests may be performed to determine the cause of anemia. Such tests may include iron studies, vitamin B12 and folate levels, and tests for chronic conditions like gastrointestinal disorders or cancer.
