How does a doctor check for H1N1?
There are a few different ways that a doctor can check for H1N1.
* Rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT): This test can be done in a doctor's office or clinic and provides results in about 15 minutes. The RIDT detects the presence of influenza A or B viruses, including H1N1.
* Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test: This test is more sensitive than the RIDT and can detect the presence of H1N1 even if the virus is present in low levels. The PCR test is typically done in a laboratory and results can take several days.
* Viral culture: This test involves growing the H1N1 virus in a laboratory setting. Viral culture is the most definitive way to diagnose H1N1, but it can take several days or weeks to get results.
In addition to these tests, a doctor may also order other tests, such as a chest X-ray or blood tests, to help diagnose H1N1 and rule out other possible causes of illness.
