What is hyporthermia?

Hypothermia occurs when the body loses more heat than it produces. This can lead to a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is 37°C (98.6°F). Hypothermia occurs when body temperature drops below 35°C (95°F).

Hypothermia can be caused by exposure to cold weather, especially if you're not dressed warmly enough. It can also be caused by immersion in cold water, even for a short time.

Hypothermia is a serious medical condition that can lead to death if not treated. Symptoms of hypothermia include:

* Shivering

* Slurred speech

* Confusion

* Drowsiness

* Loss of coordination

* Shallow breathing

* Weak pulse

* Loss of consciousness

If you think someone is experiencing hypothermia, call 911 immediately. While you're waiting for help to arrive, try to warm the person up by:

* Removing wet clothes

* Covering them with blankets or layers of dry clothing

* Applying warm compresses to the head, neck, and groin

* Giving them warm drinks if they're conscious and able to swallow

Don't give the person alcohol or caffeine, as these can worsen hypothermia.
