What is bloating?

Bloating is a feeling of abdominal fullness or tightness caused by an excessive amount of gas in the digestive tract. It can cause swelling, pain, and discomfort in the abdomen and may also contribute to a decrease in appetite, indigestion, nausea, and flatulence. Common causes of bloating include foods, such as beans, cruciferous vegetables, and gluten-containing grains, that create gas during digestion, as well as certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux, and lactose intolerance. Additionally, bloating can be caused by constipation, fluid retention, and hormonal changes due to menstruation or pregnancy.
