Definition of Influenza A

Influenza A, also known as swine flu, is a type of flu virus that usually occurs in pigs. This virus can be transferred from animal to human, resulting in extreme illness.

Causes

• Influenza A is caused by a virus that infects the cells in the nose. It then spreads to the rest of the body, causing symptoms of the virus.

Symptoms

• Symptoms of influenza A include sore throat, chills, nausea, vomiting, body aches, coughing, fever, fatigue and diarrhea.

Complications

• Influenza A can cause serious complications, such as pneumonia or respiratory failure, if untreated. If you develop either of these conditions it is extremely important to seek medical attention, as both can be fatal.

Treatments

• The only treatments available for influenza A are medications that relieve symptoms. These can be cough suppressants, fever medications or anti-vomiting medicines.

Prevention/Solution

• A vaccine for influenza A is available from most doctors and is considered the best way to ward off the virus, other than washing your hands and keeping infected surfaces clean.
