Side Effects of Gamma Aminobutyric Acid

Gamma aminobutyric acid is an anticonvulsant medication used in the treatment of seizures and fibromyalgia. The drug works by slowing down the chemical reactions in the brain that are responsible for causing seizures, which in turn helps to prevent them from occurring. As with most anticonvulsant medications, there are a number of side effects associated with use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, there are certain side effects associated with using this medication. Some of these side effects include anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, balance problems, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, itching, stomach pain, irritation, joint or muscle pain, increased appetite and memory problems. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with gamm aminobutyric acid, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • There are also a number of severe side effects associated with using this drug. Some of these side effects include easy bruising and bleeding, severe tiredness, high fever, muscle pain, muscle tenderness, general weakness, rapid weight gain and swelling of the hands and feet. These side effects are also very rare.

    Important Safety Information

    • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following new symptoms while taking this medication: depression, anxiety, sudden mood changes, agitation, hostility, restlessness, thoughts of suicide or sudden behavioral changes. If you stop taking gamma aminobutyric acid suddenly, you may experience more severe seizures or withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of withdrawal include headache, insomnia, nausea and diarrhea.

    Use

    • Always use this drug in accordance with your doctor's orders and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. Gamma aminobutyric acid is taken in pill form and should be ingested with a full glass of water. The medication can be taken either with or without food and should always be taken in the same dosages each day. If you miss a dose of the medication, take the next one as soon as possible and never take two at the same time.
