The Side Effects of Proctozone

Proctozone is a steroid medication used in the treatment of itching or swelling caused by hemorrhoids in the rectal area. The medication works by reducing inflammation in the area, which in turn alleviates the symptoms caused by hemorrhoids. As with most steroid medications, there are a number of side effects associated with using Proctozone.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects include rectal pain and burning, changes in menstrual cycle in females, acne, increased perspiration, increased body hair, and increased facial hair growth. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using this medication, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects include shortness of breath, muscle weakness, swelling of the ankles and feet, rapid weight gain, severe rectal pain, severe stomach pain, bleeding from the anus, seizures, and sudden headaches. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large number of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • Never take Proctozone through the mouth and always apply the medication to the rectal area. Before using this medication, consult with your doctor if you suffer from any of the following ailments: a history of tuberculosis, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, stomach ulcer, or if you have had a recent colonoscopy. If symptoms do not improve after a few days, or if they worsen, contact your doctor for an adjusted treatment method.

    Usage

    • Always use Proctozone exactly as it was prescribed to you by your doctor and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. The medication is administered as an ointment and should be inserted into the rectum through a suppository. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application and be sure to remove the outer wrapper of the suppository before inserting it.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the above side effects, contact your local physician immediately.

If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Proctozone is meant as a treatment of hemorrhoids only and should not be used for any other medical purpose unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
