Yeast Overgrowth Syndrome

Yeast overgrowth is a condition that affects the entire body and immune system. Yeast (candida albicans) is commonly found on the skin, in the mouth, vagina and rectum. Yeast overgrowth is diagnosed through a physical, history and blood tests.
  1. Causes

    • Antibiotics kill healthy bacteria in the stomach, causing yeast to multiply, and sugar, birth control pills and other drugs stimulate yeast production. All causes of yeast overgrowth are not known.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of yeast overgrowth include diarrhea, constipation, depression, recurrent infections, fatigue, headaches, concentration difficulties, skin problems and muscle and joint problems.

    Treatment

    • Treatment depends on the severity and location of yeast overgrowth symptoms. Antifungals and special diets are usually given in addition to supplements and treatment of the comorbid illness.

    Diet

    • Sugar and yeast are eliminated from the diet, making the body unfriendly for yeast to thrive and multiply. Fermented and processed foods and alcohol are also eliminated.

    Supplements

    • Garlic, evening primrose oil, chamomile, lactobacillus acidophilus, caprylic acid, Pau d'arco, echinacea, cat's claw, barberry and black cohosh are supplements commonly used in the treatment of yeast overgrowth.
